{"id":864,"date":"2011-02-11T17:07:56","date_gmt":"2011-02-11T17:07:56","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-07T07:27:33","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T07:27:33","slug":"worked-on-cowl-clearance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2011\/02\/11\/worked-on-cowl-clearance\/","title":{"rendered":"Worked on Cowl Clearance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finished installing the spinner and then threw the top cowl up to see what kind of clearance I have on top of the engine. \u00a0I put a piece of 3\/4&#8243; thick scrap wood on top of the flywheel to space the cowl up so that it lines up with the spinner.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9027.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9027.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>With the lightspeed coils moved forward and installed on the taller bracket, I only had about 1\/4&#8243; between the coils and the bottom of the cowl. \u00a0This certainly isn&#8217;t enough clearance. \u00a0On top of that, I&#8217;ve decided to install a plenum instead of baffle seals, this means I need even more clearance that I would if I were installing baffle seals.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9028.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9028.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>While I had the top cowl roughly in position, I wanted to see how high the oil cooler could be mounted. \u00a0It looks like I can go up to the point that the center hole in the flange is aligned with the upper engine mount tube.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9029.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9029.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to see here, but this still gives me about 1\/2&#8243; clearance between the oil cooler and the cowl (even if I don&#8217;t relieve the end of the mounting flange a little more).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9031.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9031.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I took a picture of the rear part of the top of the engine. \u00a0Because of the way the cowl slopes, there is a lot more height farther back.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9033.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9033.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I moved the ignition coils back to the original mounting bracket.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9035.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9035.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Since I&#8217;m going with the plenum, The rear baffle mount doesn&#8217;t need to be this large bracket since the upper edge of the aft wall will be supported by the plenum itself. \u00a0I cut off the forward end of this bracket.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9034.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9034.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the bracket installed on the engine. \u00a0I really need to see if I can find a shorter bolt. \u00a0These 1\/4&#8243;-20 case bolts are a little hard to find though.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9036.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9036.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Now we have plenty of clearance. \u00a0There&#8217;s at least an inch above the coils now. \u00a0I&#8217;ll probably shoot for having the plenum sit about 1\/2&#8243; below the bottom of the cowl, so that should provide plenty of clearance between the coils and the plenum. \u00a0It&#8217;s less of an issue if the spacing between the coils and the plenum is tight though since the plenum will move with the engine.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110211\/IMG_9037.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9037.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I finished installing the spinner and then threw the top cowl up to see what kind of clearance I have on top of the engine. \u00a0I put a piece of 3\/4&#8243; thick scrap wood on top of the flywheel to space the cowl up so that it lines up with the spinner.
