{"id":833,"date":"2011-03-25T17:07:56","date_gmt":"2011-03-25T17:07:56","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-08T04:40:11","modified_gmt":"2017-12-08T04:40:11","slug":"modified-dimmers-and-mounted-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2011\/03\/25\/modified-dimmers-and-mounted-c\/","title":{"rendered":"Modified Dimmers and Mounted Cabin Light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ordered three of the solid state dimmer circuits from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.periheliondesign.com\/\">Perihelion Design<\/a>. \u00a0They&#8217;re completely self contained and use a LM317T chip to regulate the voltage to the lights.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110325\/IMG_9190.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9190.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The zig-zag trace that connects the outer two pads regulates the minimum voltage. \u00a0With this short, the dimmer puts out 1.3V at the low end. \u00a0This is too low for the annunciator and cabin lights I&#8217;m using.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110325\/IMG_9192.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9192.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I broke this connection so that I could solder a more appropriate resistor in place of this trace.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110325\/IMG_9193.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9193.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The cabin light needs a 330\u03a9 resistor to set the low end of the voltage range to 5V. \u00a0Below that, the cabin light I&#8217;m using shuts off, so there&#8217;s no point in letting the dimmer go below that voltage.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110325\/IMG_9194.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9194.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The dimmer that controls the annunciator lights needs a 150\u03a9 resistor to set the low end of the voltage range to 3V. \u00a0The third dimmer will be used to dim the lights that go under the glareshield.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110325\/IMG_9195.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9195.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where I mounted the light. \u00a0It&#8217;s basically as far forward as I could mount it without interfering with the roll bar. \u00a0This is still low enough that it illuminates the whole panel, but far enough forward that I can illuminate my lap reasonably well. \u00a0This can also be turned left-to-right as well as angled up and down. \u00a0I&#8217;ll most likely wire this directly to the battery bus so that I can use it to illuminate the cabin and baggage area when loading\/unloading the plane.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110325\/IMG_9196.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9196.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I ordered three of the solid state dimmer circuits from Perihelion Design. \u00a0They&#8217;re completely self contained and use a LM317T chip to regulate the voltage to the lights.
