{"id":755,"date":"2011-08-12T17:04:30","date_gmt":"2011-08-12T17:04:30","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-09T06:31:19","modified_gmt":"2017-12-09T06:31:19","slug":"worked-on-cowl-hinges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2011\/08\/12\/worked-on-cowl-hinges\/","title":{"rendered":"Worked on Cowl Hinges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tyson Weihs, one of the co-founders of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreflight.com\/\">ForeFlight<\/a>, stopped by tonight to check out the project along with my buddy Andre. \u00a0We spent an hour or so talking about RVs before I got started building.<\/p>\n<p>I spent most of the night working on the cowl attach hinges. \u00a0First up was to pull the lower cowl and finish drilling the stainless hinges along the bottom edge of the cowl. \u00a0Drilling steel is a pain, and you really want to drill the hinge before drilling the cowl to avoid elongating the hole in the cowl. \u00a0Next up, I removed some of the eyelets in the hinge that runs along the top of the firewall. \u00a0The hinge pin has to be removed and installed in two separate pieces through the oil door.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110812\/IMG_9613.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9613.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I then drilled additional holes in all of the hinges that will bond to the cowl (nine total) and deburred everything. \u00a0The small holes will be used for AN426A3-5 rivets (not AN426AD rivets since that can crush the fiberglass). \u00a0The larger holes will allow the epoxy\/flox mixture to squeeze up through the holes and bond to the layer of glass that will be laid over the rivet shop heads. \u00a0This will provide a far stronger joint than just rivets alone. \u00a0I will be using West Systems G\/Flex epoxy which has a modulus of elasticity of 150,000psi. \u00a0This is substantially more flexible than their 105\/205 epoxy which has a modulus of elasticity of 450,000psi, but substantially more rigid than adhesive sealants like the\u00a0MC-236-B2 sealant I used on the tank.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20110812\/IMG_9614.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_9614.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tyson Weihs, one of the co-founders of ForeFlight, stopped by tonight to check out the project along with my buddy Andre. \u00a0We spent an hour or so talking about RVs before I got started building.
