{"id":515,"date":"2013-01-06T16:57:32","date_gmt":"2013-01-06T16:57:32","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-12T16:02:36","modified_gmt":"2017-12-12T16:02:36","slug":"added-lock-to-canopy-latch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2013\/01\/06\/added-lock-to-canopy-latch\/","title":{"rendered":"Added Lock to Canopy Latch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I drilled a hole in the side of the fuselage skin for the canopy latch lock. \u00a0Getting this hole positioned correctly required numerous measurements and calculations to ensure that the lock wouldn&#8217;t interfere with any part of the latch.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0705.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0705.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I fabricated a 0.063&#8243; doubler plate to position the lock so that the face is flush with the skin. \u00a0The plate will be centered over the hole, so I added some layout marks to help center it.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0706.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0706.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After drilling the plate to the skin and drilling out for the lock, I installed everything to see how well it lines up. \u00a0The lock is almost perfectly flush with the skin.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0707.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0707.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Next, I needed to mill out the slot for the cam. \u00a0I headed to the Tech Shop and quickly milled out a slot in the lower mounting angle.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0708.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0708.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I then milled out a corresponding slot in the latch handle.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0709.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0709.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The cam is only about 0.080&#8243; thick, but my smallest mill was 3\/16&#8243;. \u00a0Because of this, I had to offset the slots so that the cam would just fit.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0710.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0710.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After reinstalling the components in the plane, I tested it out and everything works perfectly. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the latch in the unlocked state.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0711.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0711.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the locked state. \u00a0With the latch locked, the handle is completely immobilized. \u00a0I&#8217;m super happy with how this turned out. \u00a0Everything about the latch and lock is flush with the fuselage skin. \u00a0I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ve picked up a huge amount of speed without the handle and cam lock sticking out from the fuselage :-).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130106\/IMG_0712.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0712.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I drilled a hole in the side of the fuselage skin for the canopy latch lock. \u00a0Getting this hole positioned correctly required numerous measurements and calculations to ensure that the lock wouldn&#8217;t interfere with any part of the latch.
