{"id":499,"date":"2013-02-08T16:57:31","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T16:57:31","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-12T16:21:10","modified_gmt":"2017-12-12T16:21:10","slug":"further-work-on-cowl-joint-sta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2013\/02\/08\/further-work-on-cowl-joint-sta\/","title":{"rendered":"Further Work on Cowl Joint, Started Gear Leg Fairings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I popped the two cowl halves apart again. \u00a0The epoxy\/flox filler worked perfectly and there&#8217;s a nice smooth that perfectly matches the outside of the lower cowl. \u00a0The end of the flange was a little epoxy starved, so I mixed up some lightweight filler and buttered it up. \u00a0I&#8217;ll sand this flush tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130207\/IMG_0749.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0749.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I had a bunch of excess lightweight filler left over, so I covered the last of the fiberglass strips on the left side of the upper cowl.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130207\/IMG_0750.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0750.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Since I need the filler to cure before making any more progress on the cowl, I decided to get started on the gear leg fairings. I lined up the fairing with a couple of squares to ensure there is absolutely no twist. \u00a0Any amount of twist is added drag, and can act like a rudder to yaw the plane. \u00a0After I was sure it had no twist, I taped the trailing edge together in a few spots. \u00a0This not only keeps it straight during the next couple of steps, but the tape strips will act as a indicator to ensure I don&#8217;t introduce any twist later.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130207\/IMG_0751.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0751.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I cut out the gear leg fairing template and lined it up with a line I drew on the leading edge, making sure to make the leading edge of the template 3 7\/32 back from the scribe line.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130207\/IMG_0753.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0753.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I then taped up the rest of the template and marked all the way around.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130207\/IMG_0752.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0752.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the marked fairing.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130207\/IMG_0754.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0754.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After a few minutes with tin snips and a sanding block, here are the trimmed fairings.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130207\/IMG_0755.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0755.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I popped the two cowl halves apart again. \u00a0The epoxy\/flox filler worked perfectly and there&#8217;s a nice smooth that perfectly matches the outside of the lower cowl. \u00a0The end of the flange was a little epoxy starved, so I mixed up some lightweight filler and buttered it up. \u00a0I&#8217;ll sand this flush tomorrow.
