{"id":492,"date":"2013-02-17T16:57:31","date_gmt":"2013-02-17T16:57:31","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-12T16:34:35","modified_gmt":"2017-12-12T16:34:35","slug":"started-fitting-wheel-pants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2013\/02\/17\/started-fitting-wheel-pants\/","title":{"rendered":"Started Fitting Wheel Pants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before fitting the wheel pants, I needed to get the weight off of the wheels and get the fuselage perfectly level in both dimensions. \u00a0Since the wings aren&#8217;t on, I can&#8217;t jack on the tie down points, and I wasn&#8217;t comfortable jacking under the firewall flange. \u00a0The engine mount is plenty strong, but I didn&#8217;t just want to start jacking against one of the horizontal tubes since these are not designed to have loads placed on them perpendicular to the tubing. \u00a0Right under the top of the gear leg mount tubing is an exceptionally strong portion of the mount since it handles all of the bear impact loads, but it&#8217;s not flat enough to put the jack directly on. \u00a0After a little head scratching, I came up with a great way to jack against this point.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0774.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0774.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I slipped a 1\/2&#8243; socket extension through the hole in the top of the jack and wrapped a piece of MIL6000 hose around the end to pad it.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0776.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0776.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a shot looking up from underneath showing how the hose pads the jack point.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0777.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0777.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After jacking up the front, I raised the tail until the fuselage was level at the longerons. \u00a0I also confirmed it&#8217;s level laterally.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0778.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0778.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m holding the tail up using a strap around the tailwheel spring.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0779.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0779.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The other end is wrapped around one of the rafters in the ceiling. \u00a0The giant green thing is my cyclone dust collector from when the garage was a wood shop.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0780.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0780.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Next, I adjusted the outer wheel pant attach bracket to be perpendicular to the floor using a carpenter&#8217;s square.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0781.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0781.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The wheel pant needs to be 1&#8243; above the top of the wheel. \u00a0I hunted around the shop for a bit and found these old wooden knobs. \u00a0I taped a washer to the end to bring them up to exactly 1&#8243; thick.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0782.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0782.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>These will sit on the top of the tire to keep the wheel pant the appropriate distance away. \u00a0After this, I used a long piece of duct tape to temporarily attach the knob to the tire.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0783.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0783.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After opening up the hole on the bottom for the tire and trimming a relief on the inside for the gear leg, I fit the wheel pant for the first time. \u00a0This is going to require quite a bit of adjustment, but it&#8217;s approximately the right position here.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130217\/IMG_0785.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0785.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before fitting the wheel pants, I needed to get the weight off of the wheels and get the fuselage perfectly level in both dimensions. \u00a0Since the wings aren&#8217;t on, I can&#8217;t jack on the tie down points, and I wasn&#8217;t comfortable jacking under the firewall flange. \u00a0The engine mount is plenty strong, but I didn&#8217;t &hellip;
