{"id":465,"date":"2013-07-07T16:54:05","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T16:54:05","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-13T01:33:56","modified_gmt":"2017-12-13T01:33:56","slug":"removed-lower-cowl-bottom-hing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2013\/07\/07\/removed-lower-cowl-bottom-hing\/","title":{"rendered":"Removed Lower Cowl Bottom Hinges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Work has been absolutely killing me lately. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been working 7 days a week with almost no days off since February. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t touched the project in over 6 weeks, but I took a little break today to work more on the lower cowl bottom hinges. \u00a0The pins have been <b>really<\/b>\u00a0hard to install for a couple of reasons. \u00a0First, as I mentioned before, it&#8217;s just really awkward. \u00a0There&#8217;s very little room to get your fingers in around the exhaust pipes to manipulate the hinge pin. \u00a0The goal was to make it possible to remove the cowl without any tools, but I was having to use a scrap piece of hinge pin to\u00a0push or pull on the pins. \u00a0Second, there was a <b>lot<\/b>\u00a0of friction making it really hard to install or remove the pins. \u00a0I figured that if I could reduce the friction, maybe I wouldn&#8217;t need the scrap hinge pin. \u00a0I tried lubrication, but that didn&#8217;t solve the problem. \u00a0I spent some time adjusting the hinge eyelets which helped a bit, but it didn&#8217;t fully solve the problem. \u00a0I decided to try drilling out the eyelets by about 0.010&#8243;. \u00a0I got one side done, then broke the bit off in the hinge. \u00a0I tried for awhile to remove the broken bit before giving up.<\/p>\n<p>Given how much of a pain in the ass installing and removing these pins has been, I&#8217;ve been questioning my decision to use hinges here. \u00a0Although the goal was to be able to install and remove the cowl without any tools, I still needed a phillips screwdriver to remove the side hinge cover plates. \u00a0The broken bit pushed me over the edge and I decided to remove the hinges and use Skybolt 1\/4 turn fasteners on the bottom of the cowl. \u00a0I drilled out the hinges on the firewall along with the retaining clips.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130707\/IMG_0839.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0839.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I also drilled out the rivets holding the hinges to the cowl and then popped it off. \u00a0The hinge was installed with epoxy\/flox, so I was worried that I wouldn&#8217;t be able to separate it from the cowl. \u00a0This was, fortunately (or unfortunately) a lot easier than I thought. \u00a0Once I got one end separated, I could work a screwdriver under the edge and progressively pop it loose. \u00a0I now just need to figure out which Skybolt parts to order.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130707\/IMG_0841.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0841.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Work has been absolutely killing me lately. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been working 7 days a week with almost no days off since February. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t touched the project in over 6 weeks, but I took a little break today to work more on the lower cowl bottom hinges. \u00a0The pins have been really\u00a0hard to install for a &hellip;
