{"id":460,"date":"2013-07-24T16:54:05","date_gmt":"2013-07-24T16:54:05","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-13T01:38:54","modified_gmt":"2017-12-13T01:38:54","slug":"installed-anti-splat-aero-oil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2013\/07\/24\/installed-anti-splat-aero-oil\/","title":{"rendered":"Installed Anti Splat Aero Oil Separator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I decided to install an oil separator to keep oil off the belly, and the unit from <a href=\"http:\/\/antisplataero.com\/\">Anti Splat Aero<\/a> seems to be the best unit on the market. \u00a0I ordered their install kit which comes with everything needed except a couple of bolts. \u00a0I first removed the plug in the side of the engine just in front of the propeller governor pad. \u00a0I installed a reducer then an AN823 elbow. \u00a0The kit comes with an AN822 elbow, but there isn&#8217;t enough clearance from the engine mount to install that.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0864.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0864.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I ordered the polished aluminum oil separator, but the aluminum mounting bracket looks pretty rough next to it.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0865.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0865.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I purchased an aluminum polishing kit from Harbor Freight a while back, so I broke that out and polished up the visible parts of the bracket. \u00a0The picture is pretty crappy, but this looks really nice.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0867.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0867.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I drilled the bracket to the firewall and Jenn helped me bolt it in place. \u00a0I then fit a short section of the included silicone hose from the breather fitting up to the intake on the oil separator.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0868.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0868.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I mounted the separator as high and as far to the right as I could so that it clears the oil filter and it won&#8217;t interfere with installing and removing the top hinge pin. \u00a0Unfortunately, that plus the wrong elbow means the included oil return line is too short. \u00a0I&#8217;ll call them tomorrow and see if they can send me a longer hose.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0869.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0869.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I pulled off the #2 exhaust pipe and drilled a 3\/4&#8243; hole in the top.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0870.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0870.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The vacuum valve mounts on the exhaust pipe like this. \u00a0The slight angle pressurizes the line so that only higher pressure from the crankcase will push gases into the exhaust pipe. \u00a0This has a reed valve inside that only allows flow from the crankcase into the exhaust pipe and not the other way.<\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b>\u00a0This is backward; the opening should face towards the tail end of the exhaust pipe. \u00a0This was fixed long before first flight. \u00a0As always, please read the directions and don&#8217;t assume I know what the hell I&#8217;m doing :-), yada yada yada&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0871.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0871.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The output of the oil separator goes straight down the firewall. \u00a0You can see that it just clears the oil filter.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0872.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0872.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The drain line goes through a clamp on the firewall and then into the vacuum valve.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0874.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0874.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>This location for the vacuum valve easily clears the engine mount, exhaust support straps, brake line and starter cable.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20130724\/IMG_0876.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0876.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I decided to install an oil separator to keep oil off the belly, and the unit from Anti Splat Aero seems to be the best unit on the market. \u00a0I ordered their install kit which comes with everything needed except a couple of bolts. \u00a0I first removed the plug in the side of the engine &hellip;
