{"id":416,"date":"2011-11-29T16:54:04","date_gmt":"2011-11-29T16:54:04","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-13T02:19:39","modified_gmt":"2017-12-13T02:19:39","slug":"20131129","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2011\/11\/29\/20131129\/","title":{"rendered":"OAT Probe and Empennage Fairings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I drilled the bottom of the wing for the outside air temperature probe. \u00a0I installed it in the wing, adjacent to one of the inspection plates (just to the upper left in this picture).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1036.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1036.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I also cut a small hole in the conduit here so that the OAT probe wires could exit. \u00a0You can see the 2 conductor molex connector I used here as well. \u00a0I&#8217;m honestly not sure the connector is worth the trouble since it would have to be cut off to remove the probe anyway. \u00a0It&#8217;s probably better to just use a couple of butt splices to crimp the probe wires together with a service loop for future maintenance. \u00a0With this done, I think I&#8217;m done with the wings until they go to the airport.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1039.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1039.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I needed a little more filler on the front of the rudder.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1041.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1041.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;as well as the aft side of the vertical stabilizer.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1042.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1042.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After that cured, I filed and sanded it down to create a uniform 0.150&#8243; gap (the same as the lower gap under the rudder horn).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1043.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1043.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I also trimmed a little more off the bottom rudder fairing and then removed all of the gel coat around the hole in preparation for bonding a patch. \u00a0For a non-structural patch like this, removing the gel coat isn&#8217;t necessary. \u00a0I did it more so that the patch would be flush with the gel coat and I wouldn&#8217;t have to use as much filler to fair it in.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1045.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1045.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I added a patch made of three layers of 8.9oz\/yd cloth.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1046.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1046.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>To keep it tight against the fairing, I laid a piece of plastic over the patch and taped it tight. \u00a0I then taped a piece of scrap aluminum over the patch to ensure it cures totally flat.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20131129\/IMG_1048.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1048.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I drilled the bottom of the wing for the outside air temperature probe. \u00a0I installed it in the wing, adjacent to one of the inspection plates (just to the upper left in this picture).
