{"id":347,"date":"2014-02-24T16:50:39","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T16:50:39","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2018-02-18T15:30:02","modified_gmt":"2018-02-18T15:30:02","slug":"second-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2014\/02\/24\/second-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrapped up the inspection from yesterday and turned the oil pressure regulator all the way down. \u00a0I pulled the plane out and took it for its second flight. \u00a0This was mostly a duplicate of the first flight to get a little more confidence in the engine and other systems, but I stayed up for nearly an hour instead of 30 minutes. \u00a0I kept the power up over 75% for most of the flight, but slowed down to do a few more stalls and a couple of power on stalls (both in the video below). \u00a0You can see the power on stall by how high the nose is above the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>I also had a chance to test the autopilot a bit. \u00a0Since I was mostly flying racetrack patterns around the airport, I engaged the altitude hold mode at 5,000&#8242; and used the heading bug to drive the plane around. \u00a0I also tested the vertical speed hold mode and altitude intercept, and everything worked beautifully. \u00a0On the descent, I tested the roll hold mode which keeps a constant bank angle. \u00a0This was great for spiraling down to pattern altitude.<\/p>\n<p>The plane ran great, and the oil pressure is down a bit, but I&#8217;m still getting over 95 psi at takeoff. \u00a0This is the red line that AeroSport recommended I set, but Lycoming allows up to 115 psi for takeoff. \u00a0I&#8217;m running about 85 psi in cruise, so I may be just fine.<\/p>\n<p>I also had a chance to test my oil cooler butterfly valve effectiveness, and I&#8217;m very pleased with how well it works. \u00a0In cruise, I was running 185\u00ba F with the valve wide open. \u00a0I closed the valve and the temp climbed up to 223\u00ba F within just a couple of minutes. \u00a0It was still climbing, but the engine monitor was complaining about the high oil temp, so I opened the valve back up. \u00a0The temp rapidly dropped back to 185\u00ba F. \u00a0This should be really useful in cold temps to keep my oil temperature up.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered to turn on the forward facing GoPro camera in the cockpit, and I also hooked up a camera under the tailwheel spring. \u00a0That provides a nice view of the main wheels during takeoff and landing.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-347-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/videos\/Second%20Flight.m4v?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/videos\/Second%20Flight.m4v\">http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/videos\/Second%20Flight.m4v<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrapped up the inspection from yesterday and turned the oil pressure regulator all the way down. \u00a0I pulled the plane out and took it for its second flight. \u00a0This was mostly a duplicate of the first flight to get a little more confidence in the engine and other systems, but I stayed up for &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2014\/02\/24\/second-flight\/\" class=\"excerpt-link\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-347","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-miscellaneous"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/347","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=347"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/347\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3714,"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/347\/revisions\/3714"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=347"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=347"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=347"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
