{"id":1265,"date":"2009-04-13T17:21:36","date_gmt":"2009-04-13T17:21:36","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-14T19:00:14","modified_gmt":"2017-12-14T19:00:14","slug":"finished-trim-tab-and-fitting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2009\/04\/13\/finished-trim-tab-and-fitting\/","title":{"rendered":"Finished Trim Tab and Fitting Control Surfaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finished riveting the trim tab with the exception of a couple of pop rivets that I need to order. \u00a0I&#8217;m really happy with how this turned out. \u00a0It&#8217;s not perfect, and I&#8217;m sure I could do better after I get more experience, but it turned out really well.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0209.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0209.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere is the bottom side with the trim servo hooked up. \u00a0I&#8217;m not getting anywhere near the +25\u00ba\/-35\u00ba travel the manual states is optimal, so I&#8217;ll have to call Van&#8217;s about that, but at least it&#8217;s all hooked up and working.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0210.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0210.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s a closeup of the trim tab push rod. \u00a0I&#8217;ll probably need to file the edges of the opening in the elevator to get a little more clearance, but that can wait.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0211.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0211.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nI pulled down the rudder and fit in to the vertical stabilizer. \u00a0The clearance between the vertical stabilizer tip and rudder counterbalance skin is too tight right now, but I&#8217;ll open it up a bit when I do more of the fiberglass work.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0212.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0212.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nThe gap between the lower edge of the counterbalance skin and the upper edge of the vertical stabilizer is nice and uniform though.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0213.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0213.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nNext I got started on fitting the elevators to the horizontal stabilizer. \u00a0The horizontal stabilizer skin needs to be trimmed a bit to allow the elevator counterweights to clear, so I marked and trimmed the extra off.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0214.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0214.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nThe lower portion of the rear spar flange also has to be trimmed to clear the elevator horns. \u00a0This is tricky because you really don&#8217;t want to nick the spar reinforcing bars just behind the flange. \u00a0I stuck an extra strip of 0.032&#8243; aluminum under there when using the dremel tool to give me a little insurance. \u00a0Worked great; clean cut and no nicks on the reinforcing bars.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0215.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0215.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere are both elevators fit to the horizontal stabilizer. \u00a0It looks so cool to finally see some big parts taking shape.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090413\/CIMG0216.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0216.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I finished riveting the trim tab with the exception of a couple of pop rivets that I need to order. \u00a0I&#8217;m really happy with how this turned out. \u00a0It&#8217;s not perfect, and I&#8217;m sure I could do better after I get more experience, but it turned out really well.
