{"id":1241,"date":"2009-05-21T17:21:35","date_gmt":"2009-05-21T17:21:35","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-14T22:01:46","modified_gmt":"2017-12-14T22:01:46","slug":"finished-drilling-main-skins-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2009\/05\/21\/finished-drilling-main-skins-a\/","title":{"rendered":"Finished Drilling Main Skins and Fit Outboard Leading Edge Skins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My buddy Andre stopped by tonight and drilled all of the bottom main skins while I worked on getting the leading edge skins ready to install. \u00a0I started with fabricating a simple cradle to hold the skins while fitting the ribs. \u00a0This is just a couple of pieces of particle board roughly cut to the shape of the ribs and lined with some old carpet padding I had laying around. \u00a0The shape really isn&#8217;t that critical since it just needs to help hold the skins closed while you get the clecos in place.<\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b>\u00a0Particleboard is really the wrong material for this as this fixture will take a fair amount of abuse during the build. \u00a0Both of these U shaped pieces broke near the bottom of the U while working on my outboard leading edges. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t need them anymore, so I didn&#8217;t fix them, but save yourself the hassle and use plywood.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090522\/CIMG0307.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0307.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nAndre and I clecoed the leading edge ribs into place and fit the leading edge of the left wing in place.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090522\/CIMG0308.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0308.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nThe innermost rib needs to be fitted with a joint plate where nutplates will mount to help hold the fuel tank. \u00a0This was a real bitch since there are no holes in either the joint plate or the rib and the fit is <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">really<\/span>\u00a0tight. \u00a0After futzing with it for about 10 minutes, I finally got everything in place and drilled a few holes to hold everything in alignment. \u00a0The only issue I ran into was one of the holes that attach the rib to the main spar ended up with too little edge clearance. \u00a0I doubt it will be an issue, but I&#8217;ll check with Van&#8217;s just to be sure.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090522\/CIMG0309.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0309.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nAfter Andre left, I knocked out the other leading edge in an hour or so. \u00a0These still need to be match drilled, but that can wait until tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090522\/CIMG0310.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0310.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My buddy Andre stopped by tonight and drilled all of the bottom main skins while I worked on getting the leading edge skins ready to install. \u00a0I started with fabricating a simple cradle to hold the skins while fitting the ribs. \u00a0This is just a couple of pieces of particle board roughly cut to the &hellip;
