{"id":1220,"date":"2009-06-25T17:21:35","date_gmt":"2009-06-25T17:21:35","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-14T22:17:32","modified_gmt":"2017-12-14T22:17:32","slug":"fabricated-tank-vent-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2009\/06\/25\/fabricated-tank-vent-lines\/","title":{"rendered":"Fabricated Tank Vent Lines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I fabricated the tank vent lines tonight. \u00a0These are the lines that will let air back into the tank as fuel is pumped out during flight. \u00a0First up was to flare one end of the 1\/4&#8243; tubing using the Parker Rolo-Flair flaring tool. \u00a0This will flare aluminum, copper, and stainless steel in sizes ranging from 1\/4&#8243; to 3\/4&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0394.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0394.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere is what one of the flares looks like on the 1\/4&#8243; aluminum tube. \u00a0I&#8217;m using 5052 tubing instead of the 3003 tubing that comes with the kit. \u00a0It seems to be easier to work with and isn&#8217;t as prone to cracking when flared.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0396.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0396.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nThe holes that the vent line passes through the interior ribs doesn&#8217;t line up with the fitting in the end rib (I had to move it over to make room to mount the fitting. \u00a0The tube has to jog over 1 1\/4&#8243; in the inboard bay. \u00a0I needed a little bit of straight tubing at the fitting, so I determined that the jog could take up 5 5\/8&#8243; of the inboard bay. \u00a0A little quick trigonometry (arctan of 1 1\/4 divided by 5 5\/8&#8243;) yielded about 13\u00ba for the bends (I know I wrote arcsin below. \u00a0Give me a break; it&#8217;s been 20 years since I used this stuff. \u00a0I&#8217;m entitled to be a little rusty).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0399.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0399.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere is the bending tool I&#8217;m using. \u00a0It&#8217;s an Imperial 470FH. \u00a0It can do 180\u00ba bends in 1\/4&#8243;, 3\/8&#8243;, and 1\/2&#8243; tubing.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0404.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0404.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nAnd here is the resulting shape in tubing.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0400.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0400.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nYou can see how accurate the bend was here. \u00a0The flare lines up perfectly with the fitting without having to use any force to hold it there.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0401.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0401.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s what the inboard bay looks like. \u00a0You can see that the bend goes almost all the way to the second rib.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0402.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0402.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere is the outboard bay. \u00a0You can see how the clip I fabricated earlier supports the tubing. \u00a0I&#8217;ll give a slight upward bend to the end of the tube after installing this for the last time to get the end of the tube as high up in the tank as possible. \u00a0After spending about an hour fabricating this for the right tank, it only took about another 20 minutes to repeat the process for the left tank.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090625\/CIMG0403.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0403.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I fabricated the tank vent lines tonight. \u00a0These are the lines that will let air back into the tank as fuel is pumped out during flight. \u00a0First up was to flare one end of the 1\/4&#8243;
