{"id":1205,"date":"2009-08-09T17:21:35","date_gmt":"2009-08-09T17:21:35","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-14T22:24:58","modified_gmt":"2017-12-14T22:24:58","slug":"sealed-left-fuel-tank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2009\/08\/09\/sealed-left-fuel-tank\/","title":{"rendered":"Sealed Left Fuel Tank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got up early this morning before the kids were up to work on the plane a little. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t enough time to get started on the fuel tanks, so I decided to fabricate these splice plates instead. \u00a0These will get riveted to the outboard leading edge wing skins and provide additional nutplates for the fuel tank to attach to.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090809\/CIMG0445.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0445.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nHere is a closeup of one of the nutplates. \u00a0The skin is dimpled here to accept the fuel tank dimples and #8 flush screws.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090809\/CIMG0447.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0447.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t get any pictures of how the sealant is applied, but I just followed Van&#8217;s instructions. \u00a0I applied a &lt;3\/16&#8243; bead just ahead of the skin to baffle rivets (where the long row of silver clecos are below) as well as sealant around each of the rib to baffle\u00a0rivets and along the outer ribs. \u00a0Next, I dropped the baffle into place and clecoed every skin to baffle hole to ensure a tight fit (I&#8217;m really glad I have the pneumatic cleco gun).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090809\/CIMG0448.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0448.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nNext, the upper and lower rib to baffle holes are pop riveted.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090809\/CIMG0449.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0449.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nThen the z-brackets are pop riveted on. \u00a0Double check the orientation of each of these brackets because it varies and it would be really hard to change once they&#8217;re riveted on. \u00a0Just like other builders, I had to grind the nose of my crappy Harbor Freight pop rivet gun down to get to these pop rivets.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090809\/CIMG0450.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0450.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nAt the top of this picture, you can see the bead of sealant that gets formed when the baffle gets pushed into position. \u00a0I&#8217;m really glad I purchased a Semco sealant gun now. \u00a0It made it trivial to get a nice bead on the skin.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090809\/CIMG0451.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0451.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\nI came out into the garage a little later in the evening. \u00a0It was too late to get started sealing the other tank, so I took down one of the\u00a0outboard leading edge skins and deburred it. \u00a0After finishing the tanks, these will be the next pieces to get riveted.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090809\/CIMG0452.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0452.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I got up early this morning before the kids were up to work on the plane a little. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t enough time to get started on the fuel tanks, so I decided to fabricate these splice plates instead. \u00a0These will get riveted to the outboard leading edge wing skins and provide additional nutplates for the &hellip;
