{"id":1174,"date":"2009-09-20T17:18:14","date_gmt":"2009-09-20T17:18:14","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-02T18:59:04","modified_gmt":"2017-12-02T18:59:04","slug":"riveted-left-wing-leading-edge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2009\/09\/20\/riveted-left-wing-leading-edge\/","title":{"rendered":"Riveted Left Wing Leading Edge and Top Wing Skins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got started this morning by forming the scarf joint where the inboard and outboard top wing skins meet just behind the tank skin. \u00a0This keeps the skins from sticking up where they are doubled up.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0535.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0535.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Andre stopped by and we got started by riveting the leading edges onto the spars. \u00a0This required the double offset rivet set I modified the other day. \u00a0Bucking these was tricky since it required reaching way into the leading edges through the lightening holes and bucking blind. \u00a0We managed to get all solid rivets into these holes.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0536.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0536.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a shot inside the leading edge showing the shop heads for some of these rivets.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0537.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0537.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Afterward, we squeezed the rivets along the spar.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0538.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0538.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>We then clecoed the wing skins on (remembering the wing-walk doublers of course).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0540.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0540.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>We back-riveted all of the skins on using a 5 lb back-rivet bucking bar. \u00a0This was held against the outside of the skins while&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0541.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0541.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;the rivets were driven from the inside using an extended reach double-offset back-rivet set. \u00a0This worked beautifully. \u00a0The outside of the skins look perfect and we didn&#8217;t have to reach between the ribs to hold the bucking bar as we would for normal shooting\/bucking (which is painful between the wing walk ribs.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0543.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0543.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After squeezing the rivets on the rear spar, the left wing is ready to come off the wing jig.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0544.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0544.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here is the top of the wing from the outboard end.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0545.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0545.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here is the bottom of the wing. \u00a0The bottom main skins (inboard and outboard) are riveted after everything else in the wings are complete (ailerons, flaps, control linkage, pitot tube, autopilot servo, etc.).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090920\/CIMG0546.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0546.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I got started this morning by forming the scarf joint where the inboard and outboard top wing skins meet just behind the tank skin. \u00a0This keeps the skins from sticking up where they are doubled up.
