{"id":1171,"date":"2009-09-23T17:18:14","date_gmt":"2009-09-23T17:18:14","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-02T19:02:20","modified_gmt":"2017-12-02T19:02:20","slug":"pitot-tube-and-mount","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2009\/09\/23\/pitot-tube-and-mount\/","title":{"rendered":"Pitot Tube and Mount"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got started tonight by cutting out the hole for the pitot mount that I laid out a couple of days ago. \u00a0I used a unibit to drill out the bulk of the material, then used a nibbler and files to finish off the hole. \u00a0Next, I laid out some holes to rivet the mount to the skin (in addition to the holes along the right edge where it will rivet to the spar).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0552.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0552.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I installed the skin on the wing and match drilled the mount to the spar.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0553.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0553.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I test fit the pitot tube. \u00a0The 3\/16&#8243; aluminum tubes coming out the other end needed to be trimmed somewhat to allow the pitot tube to fit fully into the mount.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0554.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0554.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I laid out holes to attach the tube to the mount and used some aluminum tape as a clamp to hold the tube in place.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0555.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0555.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After drilling through the mount and the wall of the pitot tube, I countersunk the mount for #6 screws. \u00a0This was tricky since this is a curved surface. \u00a0Instead of using my microstop countersink, I basically just did these freehand.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0556.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0556.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I also tapped the pitot tube for 6-32 threads. \u00a0The stuff with the red lettering on it is aluminum tape. \u00a0I wrapped this around the pitot tube because there was a little slop between it and the mount.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0557.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0557.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the finished pitot tube installed in the mount. \u00a0This really turned out well, the pitot tube is tight in the mount and the screws are nice and flush.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0558.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0558.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here is the business end of the pitot tube. \u00a0The hole at the top is for measuring pitot pressure and the hole at the bottom is for measuring angle of attach. \u00a0Basically, as the wing&#8217;s angle of attach increases, this hole becomes more directly aligned into the wind. \u00a0This increases the pressure of air inside this tube which the instrument indicates as an increase in angle of attach.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090923\/CIMG0559.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0559.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I disassembled everything and countersink the pitot mount for the dimples in the skin since this will be flush mounted.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090924\/CIMG0560.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0560.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I cut the 3\/16&#8243; aluminum lines on the pitot tube shorter so that they just stick out of the mount in the wing, then installed fittings and flared the ends.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090924\/CIMG0561.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0561.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The male end of the fitting is installed and torqued.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090924\/CIMG0562.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0562.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Using some EZ-Turn, I then installed the quick disconnects on the ends. \u00a0The tubing I&#8217;m using will just push into place on these fittings.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090924\/CIMG0563.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0563.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I installed the AOA tubing in the wing. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t have enough 437-4 snap bushings to install the pitot tubing, so that will wait until I order some.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20090924\/CIMG0564.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG0564.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I got started tonight by cutting out the hole for the pitot mount that I laid out a couple of days ago. \u00a0I used a unibit to drill out the bulk of the material, then used a nibbler and files to finish off the hole. \u00a0Next, I laid out some holes to rivet the mount &hellip;
