{"id":1074,"date":"2010-01-14T17:14:49","date_gmt":"2010-01-14T17:14:49","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-04T05:33:25","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T05:33:25","slug":"finished-drilling-skin-stiffeners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2010\/01\/14\/finished-drilling-skin-stiffeners\/","title":{"rendered":"Finished Drilling Skin Stiffeners, Started Lower Longerons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got started tonight by drilling the right skin stiffener. \u00a0Just like most other tasks, the second time went much faster than the first.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100114\/CIMG1000.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1000.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>Next, I got started fabricating the lower longerons. \u00a0These are cut from raw 1&#8243;x1.25&#8243;x0.125&#8243; angle stock. \u00a0The short leg of the angle needs to be removed for the aft 4.125&#8243; of the longeron to provide clearance for a gusset that will tie this to F-704. \u00a0I made the rough cuts on a bandsaw and then used various files and scotchbrite roloc disks to get this nice and smooth.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100114\/CIMG1001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1001.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>If you look closely, you can see a gap between the horizontal leg of the longeron and the engine mount. \u00a0I anticipated that because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rvplane.com\/\">Mike Bullock<\/a> ran into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rvplane.com\/?categoryid=4&amp;dayid=411\">same problem<\/a>. \u00a0The issue is that the lower longer and aux longeron meet at this bracket at an angle and the forward ends interfere.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1002.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1002.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>A few seconds on the sanding wheel removed enough material that the lower longeron can nestle tightly into the bracket.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1003.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1003.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>The longeron also needed to slide forward a bit to allow the rear end to fit next to F-704. \u00a0I could have just cut this off flush, but this relief cut gives me more edge distance on the frontmost bolt on the top and rivet on the side.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1004.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1004.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>Here you can see how the aft end sits flush against the forward edge of F-704.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1009.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>Before drilling any holes, I wanted to see what kind of edge distance I would have on the AN3 bolts that tie the longerons to the engine bracket. \u00a0The bolts are supposed to be centered in the longeron (1\/2&#8243; from the left edge where my finger is). \u00a0This gives me about 5\/16&#8243; edge distance for the bolt. \u00a0I know other builders have run into issues with edge distance here, so I want to make sure this is sufficient.<\/p>\n<p><b>Update: <\/b>I spoke with Ken at Van&#8217;s the next morning and he confirmed that 10\/32&#8243; was fine.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1008.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1008.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I got started tonight by drilling the right skin stiffener. \u00a0Just like most other tasks, the second time went much faster than the first.
