{"id":1073,"date":"2010-01-15T17:14:49","date_gmt":"2010-01-15T17:14:49","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-12-04T05:35:00","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T05:35:00","slug":"finished-lower-longerons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/2010\/01\/15\/finished-lower-longerons\/","title":{"rendered":"Finished Lower Longerons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I fit the lower right longeron. \u00a0Here is the forward end showing how it tucks around the lower engine mount. \u00a0I also drilled the bottom holes out to #30 to see what kind of edge distance I&#8217;d end up with on the mount. \u00a0You can sort of tell here that I biased the holes 1\/16&#8243; inboard of the center point on the longerons to give me slightly more edge distance on the steel.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1010.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1010.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>Here you can see that I ended up with just over 12\/32&#8243; on the engine mount. \u00a0This is perfect as it means I more than 2d on both the mount and the longerons.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1014.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1014.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>I first match drilled the mount to #30.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1018.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1018.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>I then opened up each hole with a #15 bit (0.180&#8243;) before reaming it with a 3\/16&#8243; (0.1875) reamer. \u00a0I&#8217;m trying to only use reamers for all of the bolt holes. \u00a0They make perfectly circular holes that allow the bolts to slip in with virtually no play. \u00a0Here I&#8217;ve dropped some AN3 bolts in place to keep things aligned. \u00a0btw, it&#8217;s not an optical illusion, the bolts are intentionally spaced unevenly on the plans.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1019.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1019.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>I repeated the procedure on the left side. \u00a0Edge distances came out great here as well with over 2d on all holes.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1020.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1020.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>I laid out the F-684 gussets on the stock provided. \u00a0The area at the top and lower left that are marked with hatches need to be removed.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100115\/CIMG1021.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1021.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>Two sides of the gusset need to be bent a few degrees to allow it to set flush on the engine mount and firewall stiffener.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100116\/CIMG1022.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1022.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>After very careful checking to ensure sufficient edge distance, I drilled the left gusset to the lower engine mount. \u00a0I ended up with better than 2d on all holes but the one on the right which ended up at exactly 2d.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100116\/CIMG1023.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1023.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>The skin can then be peeled back and the firewall stiffener can be match drilled using the holes I predrilled in the gusset.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100116\/CIMG1026.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1026.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>All of these holes came out great as well with 2d or better all the way around,<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100116\/CIMG1028.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1028.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center>I then repeated the process on the right side. \u00a0This came out nearly as well. \u00a0The upper left hole came out at slightly under 2d, but that&#8217;s still within spec. \u00a0This finishes up the forward longerons and skin stiffeners.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/rv7pictures\/Originals\/20100116\/CIMG1029.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jasonbeaver.com\/rv7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/CIMG1029.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I fit the lower right longeron. \u00a0Here is the forward end showing how it tucks around the lower engine mount. \u00a0I also drilled the bottom holes out to #30 to see what kind of edge distance I&#8217;d end up with on the mount. \u00a0You can sort of tell here that I biased the holes 1\/16&#8243;
